Prizm’s 36-page educational brochure on spine is perhaps the best home remedy alternative to Krames booklets on back and neck pain.
The Prizm Home Remedy Book for back pain and neck pain has been distributed to more than 300,000 Americans
over the past 12 years, perhaps more than any other spine care manual.
An alternative to Krames
According to Bob Reznik, MBA, the author of Treat Your Back Without Surgery and The Self Help Guide to Knee Pain, the Prizm Home Remedy Book fills a gap in patient education for spine care.
“The Krames booklets on back pain and neck pain certainly provide helpful information to the person with back pain or neck pain,” says Reznik. “But the illustrations in the Krames book can be improved upon, and that’s what the Prizm Home Remedy Book attempts to do with photos of an attractive exercise model demonstrating the most popular exercises and stretches for back pain and neck pain. Krames does a good job with their booklet, but Prizm with all their experience in spine, working with the nation’s best-trained spine surgeons and spine doctors simply has access to the most-proven know-how in the field of spine.”
The best resource for spine
The Home Remedy Book has been in use at the most respected spine centers of excellence across the United States for the last 12 years.
Up to 2008, if you were a spine care physician, the only way to access the Prizm Home Remedy Book was to be a client of Prizm Development, Inc., the nation’s most experienced developer of spine centers of excellence. Spine centers developed by Prizm have been featured on the NBC Today, CBS This Morning, CNN, USA Today, Fortune, Forbes, Good Housekeeping, Womans Day, Golf, Golf Digest, Prevention and dozens of other magazines and local TV stations.
The Prizm Home Remedy Book for spine was part of Prizm’s extensive copyrighted intellectual property licensed by spine Centers of Excellence. This intellectual property for spine included spine medical illustrations, informative symptom charts, online spine encyclopedias on spine Internet sites, spine triage software systems, databases for spine, spine clinical outcome report cards, and perhaps the most extensive exercise library for spine, knee and arm problems.
In 2008, Prizm released its 36-page Home Remedy Book for sale to spine doctors in the United States and Latin America. A Spanish translation of the popular spine Home Remedy Book will be printed later in 2008 for sale to spine care doctors in Mexico and South America.
High quality photographs vs. illustrations
The value of the 36-page color Home Remedy Book is that the exercise photographs are high quality images of an exercise model demonstrating the most effective exercises for back pain and neck pain symptoms. “The exercises featured in the self-help book were selected by the best trained spine therapists in the country,” explains Reznik. “Typically, most educational booklets on spine problems are biased toward one school of thought or another. This is the inherent weakness of most of the spine educational tools out there. They either are biased toward the viewpoint of a spine orthopedic surgeon, a spine neurosurgeon, a physical medicine physician, a chiropractor or any of the many divergent physical therapy schools of thought.”
Exercises from the best-trained SPINE-specialized therapists
Reznik adds that even within the field of physical therapy, there are many different schools of thought on stretches and exercises. “Spine patients are often shocked to learn that when they start visiting back care clinics, there are so many conflicting recommendations on what to do,” says Reznik. “It’s bad enough that they suffer from back pain, but once they enter the health care system, that’s when their headache really starts.”
“In the field of physical therapy alone, there are spine therapists that follow the teachings of various gurus including McKenzie Institute, Paris Spine Institute, Maitland, Mulligan, Grimsby and Cyriax, the father of chiropractic,” says Reznik. “All of these therapists have biases. The Prizm Home Remedy Book bridges across all these biases because the back exercises featured in the educational booklet have all been selected by a cross-section of therapists in all these spine care disciplines.”
The most experienced expert in the specialty of spine
Prizm and its spine centers of excellence have been mentioned in some of the leading textbooks on health care reform, center of excellence development, and disease management centers which represent the future of healthcare. Many of Prizm spine centers and the related spine doctors are recognized by NCQA as low back pain centers of excellence.
NCQA in 2007 began a credentialing program to recognize those centers that follow protocols for the prudent use of diagnostics in the field of spine. Spine care centers and spine care physicians who want to be credentialed by the NCQA and be recognized as a low back pain center of excellence must include non-surgical treatment for spine problems, and must have patient education tools that educate back pain sufferers about what symptoms mean, the importance of nonsurgical spine care, and when emergency symptoms require surgery within 48 hours to avoid permanent paralysis of the nerves in a leg or arm. Loss of control of the bowel or bladder, for example, is a critical emergency symptom that needs to be seen by a spine surgeon within 24 hours to avoid permanent paralysis of the nerves that control bowel function.
“There’s no doubt that Krames booklets are extremely popular with physicians because they cover all the medical specialties, from cancer education, pain management, womens health, weight management, etc.,” says Reznik. “But in my opinion, as an expert in spine, and as an author of consumer health books, spine requires a specialized approach rather than a general approach. And that’s where the Prizm Home Remedy Book succeeds. Because Prizm staff helped develop the first spine center of excellence in the United States, Texas Back Institute, Prizm has the most experience in spine centers of excellence.”
The Prizm Home Remedy Book has 36 pages, of which 32 pages feature exercises for back pain, exercises for neck pain, special low back stretches that relieve back pain symptoms, and neck stretches that relieve neck pain. Other pages have information that explains how exercises relieve back and neck pain symptoms, as well as symptom flow charts that tell the person when to see the doctor.
“These custom back exercises make the back stronger, more flexible and resistant to future strain and back pain,” explains Reznik. “That’s the real cure for back pain. Not laying on your stomach and waiting for someone to do something to your back. That’s passive care, which does NOT work.
The Home Remedy Book is purchased by the spine centers for patient education purposes. Each center distributes about 3,000 copies each year to patients and to other doctors who refer spine patients to these regional spine centers of excellence. The therapists in these centers are typically the best trained in spine, with advanced certification in McKenzie, Paris, Maitland, Mulligan, etc.
The goal of each spine center on their Clinical Outcome Report Card for spine is to provide 75% of all patients with a customized Home Exercise Program. The Prizm Home Remedy Book is the centerpiece of that take home patient education.
The Prizm Home Remedy Book has been used as the main patient education booklet on spine at the
